There are also Bollywood dance routines taught step by step within the program that children could learn and perform. The Bollywood Workout is also a very effective program that could be used to promote fitness and help tackle child obesity. Other activities apart from dance and fitness could be:

Bollywood Fashion – Clothes and costumes are important features of Bollywood as it makes you stand out and be attracted to audiences. Pupils could get involved in dressing up in Indian costumes / clothes and learning about them. Older students could even create Bollywood designs by experimenting. We are open to suggestions in order to improve and fit the way you want to perform.

Art – If you are able to create Bollywood posters, drawings or paintings imagine the versatility you would have and the range of cultures that would combine together to create such beautiful artistic forms. You would be a school which would be honoured for having such talented, creative and cultural artists which would beneficial to the school. Students would want to be involved because it is exciting and you can learn and develop your creative skills which would be useful in the future.

Drama –Students could translate some Bollywood film dialogue into English as the demand for bilinguals is getting higher and this would be beneficial for your students to learn another language. You could also study some film clips and enact the scenes in a drama class which would expand your knowledge on film, dance, acting and at the same time it would promote the Indian culture.

History – Researching is always helpful in every aspect. They can find out the history behind the different dance styles incorporated within Indian film industry, see how far back Bollywood goes and then they could incorporate this knowledge in their performance but most importantly students would be able to make use of the knowledge in other subjects. It will make them alert to another culture, make them aware of another world- the Bollywood world and improve their general knowledge.

Geography – Students can study where the various dance styles used in Bollywood sequences originate from and which parts of India they come from.  Bollywood dance costumes has even be searched on Google 1,600 times monthly showing that people want to learn about the kind of clothes performers wear. They can learn about what the costumes are like from different parts of India as each sector has a different, traditional clothing design. Geography also incorporates different cities around the world which are being used for filming locations and it would enhance the student’s knowledge internationally.

Indian culture and tradition - There are many songs used to celebrate Indian festivals in Bollywood films. Songs and dances can be used and shown to teach pupils about the Indian festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Vaisakhi, Raksha Bandhan & Navratri. All these festivals are important in the Indian culture and it will be of value to students to know and be aware of different cultures, traditions and festivals.

Henna tattoos – A henna artist could be brought in to teach students how to create henna designs. Alternatively ready-made henna cones can be bought for the pupils to try out designs on each other in class. This would enhance their creativity, show their arty side and they would be able to experiment on the different parts of the body. This activity is intricate and makes concentrated use of the mind which will only make the student’s brain stronger, brighter and better.

Indian food – Pupils could be taught recipes and shown how to make Indian dishes. This will help students engage in Indian culture and experience such exquisite tastes. Cooking helps pupils develop their self-confidence, be independent and enable them to follow instructions on their own which would be beneficial when they are at a full time job where they would need to be following specific rules and doing particular tasks.

Music – Bollywood music could be played and discussions could take place on the various sounds. Musical instruments can be brought in and pupils can try out the various instruments. Indian musicians can be invited to demonstrate musical pieces and give a lecture about Bollywood music/dance/films.

Listen to your teacher / Keep practicing / Get involved in every opportunity possible as you don’t know what doors will open up for you / Don’t miss classes / Ask your teacher if you do not understand a move / Book a private lesson once a month to get your moves brushed up so that you can excel quicker

There are 3 steps that I would recommend for every person aspiring to move into the Bollywood dancing field:

1st – You must take action to start developing your skills once you have decided that this is what you wish to do. The way to do this is to join a Bollywood dance academy which is well respected, has credibility and, has experience in offering structured professional Bollywood dance training that will enable you to develop your dancing skills to a high standard. Also, to help transform you into a versatile dancer, do ensure that the Bollywood training you will receive includes dance techniques taught that ranges from Indian Classical to Modern Western. You need to look into what qualifications the instructors possess, do some research on what students have to say and find out what kind of opportunities and support they offer to help you develop further, especially if you wish to pursue a career in Bollywood dance. For example if you wish to become a professional dancer, then find out what kind of show opportunities are available to help you start developing your experience and build your CV. If you wish to become a dance instructor or choreographer, then find out if the training institution offers a teacher training program. Whilst on the program, you could assist and start building practical experience on how to run classes, choreograph routines and learning how to pass on the knowledge and skills in an effective manner to students of all ages. If you do not have a dance school near you order a home training program

2nd – After embarking on a training program a dancer must start building their portfolio. This would include building a strong CV which will list your experience and highlight achievements such as shows that you have taken part in, awards that you have received, competitions which you have won and even TV or film appearance. This will prove to be very useful when you go to look for professional work and will also help to build your contacts – people like to recommend individuals that they know. You may find that you start getting repeated bookings from the same contacts and you may even be seen by important people in the entertainment industry. A very important thing when developing your portfolio is to start obtaining Bollywood dance qualifications. It is a great way to ensure that you are receiving proper training; demonstrate to others your level of skills and receive recognised accredited qualifications.

3rd – It is also important to have a clear vision of where you wish to go in the future and do not give up.  First, decide what you want from the Bollywood dance training. Imagine what your end goal will be. If you wish to become a fantastic dancer – what does a fantastic dancer mean to you? Think about this for a moment and decide to start your training program and step by step start working towards your end goal. Remain focused and keep moving towards the direction you wish to go in. Follow the dance training programme with passion, determination and be fully committed. Even a small step at a time will help you to continue progressing. I reached a stage in my life where I decided to take action and pursue my dream of becoming a dancer and a choreographer. Everything worthwhile in life takes effort, perseverance and dedication, but I can assure you, it is well worth it!

Make sure you are healthy and fit so that you can cope with long days and heavy schedules. Your body is your asset to conduct your dance or acting work and your appearance is important.

Learn to increase your powers of concentration so that you can remain focused and remember dance steps or dialogues. Having a good memory makes life easier; this way you are able to learn your dance routines quicker, you are more determined to learn and your confidence levels will increase once you master the mind and memory.

Keep positive and remain friendly even if you are rejected and don’t get through an audition. You may be kept on the file for another time. These attributes are very important, once your mind is calm, free from any distractions and you are focused on what you want to achieve, you become optimistic which will make you stronger. Remember that having a personality which still shines even through the hardest times of your life will make people aspire to you, learn from you and you will be able to have better relationships in life through just a smile.

Develop an attractive voice and clear speech.  Don’t speak too fast or too slow and add various tones to your voice instead of remaining monotone. Speaking like a robot is unattractive so make sure that you are able to speak in a convincing and appealing manner so that you look outstanding and are noticed.  Your communication skills are vital as this is where you can get to many different platforms.

Go out of your way to give more than is expected from you. It’s by doing that little bit extra so that an ordinary person appears to be extraordinary. Remember; people will see how hard you work and you will be noticed.

Try to cooperate and remain flexible when working instead of generating conflicts.  Develop strong interpersonal communication and listening skills, as people enjoy working with friendly and easy going individuals.

Become solutions orientated instead of focusing on problems that you may be experiencing. There is always a way to improve the situation.

Try spreading happiness and joy wherever you go.  You will become a ‘people’ magnet’ as people like spending time with those who are positive and uplifting instead of those always complaining, depressive and always focusing on negative things. A smile will never do harm, it will attract many people.

Be clear about which direction you wish to move in and what goals you wish to pursue.  Have a clear vision and purpose in life, so that all your energy can be focussed there.

Once you have achieved a goal, there is nothing to stop you from having another goal. Life remains interesting when you are doing something constructive and growing by developing new skills, talents and gaining new knowledge. Watch Bollywood films and immerse yourself in the world of Indian cinema. Don’t whole heartedly believe in a pre-determined fate as action and willpower can help you start shaping a new tomorrow; changing your whole destiny and giving a future of your dream. “I hate losing but I’m not scared of making mistakes” is a quote that I really believe in.  So keep trying. Don’t give up even if you experience setbacks! By taking steps to do something you give yourself a 50 – 50% chance in succeeding or failing, but by not trying you give yourself a 100% chance of failing.

It’s like anything in life – you need to prepare yourself with the tools of the trade.

Work on your image if you are thinking of going for the lead star roles – nowadays there is a lot of emphasis on the physical looks of the actors. Go to the gym, eat healthily, discover what colours look good on you, and develop a style. Give out a confident look.

Learn the Hindi Language, unless you come from a Western background and wish to audition for a Western part in a Bollywood film. Study dialogues from Bollywood films; study their customs, ways, traditions and costumes. I think the drawback we have here in the UK is that being British Asians, directors and producers expect us to be Modern and Westernised and will only offer such roles. Therefore in order to survive in the industry you should be able to deal with all kinds of roles.

Get dance training so that you are prepared for all the song and dances in the movies. Dancing plays a very important part in Indian films. It is also important to be versatile so you can perform both the Indian Classical and the Modern Western styled choreography to suit the evolving tastes of the industry. Contact www.honeysdanceacademy.com for professional Bollywood dance classes or to order home training Bollywood dance courses. You may also order the “Bollywood Bible” by Honey Kalaria from there which will give you advice, tips and an insight into the world of Bollywood.

Polish up and develop your acting skills. There is a difference between “Trying” to be a hero and “Being” a hero. Just the presence will speak for itself!  Dialogue delivery, camera technique, voice improvisation, body language and other techniques should be brushed up

Get a professional portfolio done because a picture says a thousand words. Casting directors normally ask for photographs to be forwarded and then shortlist candidates from the photos they receive, so you need to ensure they promote you in the best way possible.

Try getting involved in events, filming, stage shows and anything that you can put onto your CV. This will allow you to build up your confidence, gain experience and provide an opportunity to be seen by those working in the entertainment business (I say to people, what use is your talent if you are going to keep dancing in front of a mirror at home and hope to be discovered someday)
